When Communication is No Longer Easy

Dementia can cause difficulty with communication, both for the person with dementia and for their loved ones. Here are some tips for improving communication with someone who has dementia:

  1. Use simple language: Speak clearly and use short, simple sentences. Avoid using complex language, slang or jargon that may be difficult to understand.

  2. Use non-verbal cues: Use gestures, facial expressions and touch to convey your message. Maintain eye contact and try to establish a connection with the person.

  3. Be patient: Give the person time to respond. Avoid interrupting or finishing sentences for them.

  4. Be positive: Use positive and encouraging language. Avoid negative statements, criticism or correction.

  5. Use visual aids: Use pictures, photographs or other visual aids to help convey your message.

  6. Avoid distractions: Minimize noise and distractions that could interfere with communication.

  7. Ask simple questions: Ask simple questions that can be answered with a yes or no response.

  8. Be flexible: Be flexible and willing to adjust your communication style to meet the person’s needs.

  9. Maintain a routine: Stick to a routine and keep communication consistent to help the person feel more secure and comfortable.
